Hardcover, burgundy cloth with gilt title on front and spine (corners square, slight foxing to margins, otherwise interior is unmarked). dw., clipped (corners worn, sticker residue on front cover with scratches, indentations, surface missing at top and bottom of spine, with small tear).
Very good condition.
Size: 11 3/8" x 10 1/2 (28.5cm x 27cm).
Born in 1830, in Solingen, Germany. Family immigrated to New Bedford, MA in 1832. During 1863 Bierstadt travels west with the writer, Fritz Hugh Ludlow. They visit Yosemite Valley, Oregon, the Columbia River area, and San Francisco. His painting, "The Rocky Mountains" exhibited at the New York Metropolitan Fair, in April of 1864, brings him notoriety. In 1876 he visits Canada several times. Also travels to Colorado, and the northern plains states and Alaska repeatedly in the following years. Travels to Europe many times throughout the 1880s and 1890s. In 1881 he visited the Yellowstone area for the first time. Died in New York City in 1902.
