Some soiling to title page, preliminary leaves nicked at fore-edges and browned. The rest of the text and all plates are very good to fine. Overall in good condition. Small old rectangular white paper ticket with red border, serrated edges and manuscript presumed shelf location tipped on to upper outer corner of front pastedown endleaf. xiv, 138 pp., 1 lithograph map, 1 double page folding lithograph view, 35 lithographs (on 34 leaves). *** FIRST EDITION. This detailed description of the island of S. Miguel in the Azores, by a long-time resident, includes a variety of historical, ecclesiastical, economic and political information. At the end are tables on exports, expenses at local hospitals, school attendance, the height above sea level of various locations on the island, etc. The map shows geographical features and towns; the 35 lithographs (signed "Serrano" or "S") are views of towns, of government and religious buildings and of costumes.
