Sherwood and Co.. London, Sherwood and Co., 1835. First Edition. First Impression. Hardback. Another day, another unknown book from George. The present volume appears to be six issues, bound, of The Alchymist Magazine, published in 1835. No covers / titles bound in, though the book does have a specific title page presumably produced specifically for this volume, and a short editorial (which offers little help) and couple of pages of contents. George has made a couple of notes to the endpaper outlining some limited research, but I'm rapidly disabusing myself of the notion that I'll be able to help continue that. George has it that the magazine was edited by H. Spicer, suggesting that it was maybe Henry Spicer (sometime writer of the period). This seems to be maintained by the quantity of pieces having been attributed to Spicer (by an unknown contemporary-ish hand on the contents pages; whom Locke postulates to be H.F. Gobbit; this being possibly their copy). That said, a footnote in issue one notes 'the editors' so who knows! A couple of pieces are attributed, but most are left anonymous (perhaps because they were all by just a couple of writers: the editors). Anyway, mysteries remain. A near fine copy. Rebound in recent half calf, with marbled boards and new eps. Various pencil notes to endpaper. Contents leaves wider than other leaves and folded (with notes as the authors of the stories) - not quite sure why this has been so fashioned. Otherwise, better than might expected of a magazine of this age (perhaps unsold stock that was bound up in the June of 1835). Good luck! [8141, Hyraxia Books]. . Near Fine.
