Moscow: Mosfilm, 1938. Vintage studio still photograph from the 1938 Russian epic film. Phototeque stamp on the verso, along with a production number stamp 5251.
One of director Sergei Eisenstein's undisputed masterpieces, and one of the great historical films, telling the story of how the titular Alexander Nevsky, a Russian prince, led a ragtag army to battle the invading Teutonic knights of the Holy Roman Empire. Though it utilized a more conventional narrative than Eisenstein's previous films, the film employed the most advanced cinematic techniques of its day, and remains a remarkable visual achievement.
The film was also a remarkable piece of propaganda: a year after the film's release, Stalin signed a nonaggression pact with Hitler-and suddenly the film was removed from cinemas, as it no longer reflected the party line against Germans. As a result, ephemera from the film's original release is scarce.
8.5 x 11.5 inches. Very Good plus, lightly worn at the corners.
Criterion Collection 87.
