Original brick-red buckram cloth, printed paper label, slightly worn to spine. Slight fading to spine. Corners slightly pushed in. Top edges trimmed, other edges deckled. Large 4to (20 x 27cm). Front hinge very slightly slack. Mild cracking at gutter following front free endpaper. Mild foxing to early and late pages. Owner's signature dated 1902 to front free endpaper. Frontis with tissue guard. Profusely illustrated, with numerous in-text illustrations and engraved plates by Pennell and various artists, as well as 12 full-page lithographs by Joseph Pennell (not included in accompanying trade edition). Faint stain to pp. 200-201. Faint band of offset browning to lithograph following p. 242. Loose newspaper cutting of 'An Appreciation' of Joseph Pennell between pp. 98-99, with offset browning to adjacent pages. Beautifully illustrated edition of Irving's influential 1832 work, with introduction and illustrations by American husband and wife team Elizabeth Robbins Pennell (1855-1936), writer and critic, and Joseph Pennell (1857-1926), artist. Frequent collaborators and travellers through Europe, the Pennells were well-placed to shape this fine edition of Irving's classic 'Spanish sketchbook'. Joseph Pennell's illustrations were his first significant lithographs and a high-point of his impressive career in book-illustration. ~Robust packaging.
