The 16 survivors of the crash were forced to take shelter in the wreckage of the aircraft, and for sustenance had to ea the bodies of the dead. The original rescue mission was abandoned after eight days, and so two of the survivors eventually made a ten-day journey over 32 miles of mountainous terrain to fetch help.
