"Frederick Sommer (1905-1999) was an American artist and photographer known for his contributions to the field of photography, as well as his work in painting, drawing, and sculpture. Born in Italy, Sommer spent most of his childhood in Brazil before moving to the United States in the 1920s. Sommer initially pursued a career in music, but after meeting the photographer Edward Weston in the 1930s, he became interested in photography. He went on to study with Ansel Adams and Minor White, and he later became a teacher of photography himself. Sommer's photographic work often featured abstract and surreal elements, and he was known for his experimentation with photographic techniques and processes. He also produced a significant body of work in other mediums, including painting, drawing, and collage. Throughout his career, Sommer received numerous awards and honors for his work, and his photographs have been exhibited in major museums and galleries around the world.
