Three volume set published by Chelsea House, includes the burgundy colored cloth covered slipcase. Published 1986, a first printing set. A chronological review of American artists. 820 artists are profiled, in order by their birth year with more than 1,000 color photos. There is an emphasis on both the artist's life and work and also the auction results for each artists as well, with analysis of more than 40,000 auction sales. Volume 1 covers the years 1688-1842; Volume 2 covers 1842-1874; Volume 3 concludes the set with 1874-1930. Each artists is profiled on at least one full page, along with a color photo of at least one example of their work, and a brief analysis of auction results. In addition to the artist profiles, each volume also includes several in-depth essays on relevant topics of the period covered such as; American Folk Art, Marine and Ship Portraiture, Paintings of the American West, American Impressionism, Modernism, Expressionism, Realism, African-American Art, American Artists Abroad, and several other topics as well. Contributors include Piri Halasz, A.J. Peluso, Henry Neimann, Richard Boyle, David Sellin, Matthew Baigell, Diane Tepfer, Oswaldo Roque, and many other leading art historians and academics. This copy is not a library discard. There are no former ownership marks, no writing on the text. Wear is limited to a few very light dots of age tanning to the edges of each volume's text block. The slipcase is intact and all corners are square without edge wear. The volumes have some mild sun fading to the spine, and the lettering of the title imprinted in gold on Volume II has a few dots of wear. Each volume is approx. 350 pages, 8-1/2" X 11-1/4. Sewn binding, with burgundy cloth covered boards. Printed in Japan on high quality glossy stock. A beautiful addition to the art library!
