Yale's renowned collection is celebrated with color plates that reveal the beauty and craft of such objects as an ornately carved chest from late-eighteenth-century Boston and a modernist 1950 sideboard by Dan Cooper. Ward's introductory essay surveys the diverse uses to which these objects were put over the years. catalogue of 233 examples in the collection, organized by type (boxes, table chests, chests of drawers, chests on chest, dressing and bureau tables, high chests of drawers, desks, bookcases, secretaries, cupboards, buffets, sideboards, pianos, etc.), with critical analysis, descriptive comments, condition report, provenance and bibliographical references for each item. Appendix: also has notes on 28 examples not included in the catalogue because of condition; bibliography.
