Los Angeles, California, 1903; 2 1/2" x 7" satin ribbon badge from the G.A.R. Camp Fire at Los Angeles August 26, 1903, previously belonging to Civil War Colonel E.F.C. Klokke (1834-1914) of the 24th Illinois Volunteers. Klokke was an officer in the Cumberland Department of the newly formed Signal Corps and a veteran of the Battle Of Shiloh. In 1867 he was elected Clerk of the Cook County Illinois Superior Court and held that office for a number years before moving to Los Angeles, where he built a landmark Victorian home at 2105 South Figueroa and soon established himself as a prominent citizen. Accompanying the badge are two 2 3/4" x 6" red satin ribbons. The text of the first reads, "Col. E.F.C. Klokke, Compliments of Mr. & Mrs. Wiley Wells, Saturday, January 27th, 1888." The second ribbon, with the same wording, is made out to Mrs. Klokke. Guilford Wiley Wells (1840-1909) was born in Livingston County, New York. Remarkably well preserved copy of this rare hardback copyright 1906; pictorial boards (see photos) show light shelf wear and gently bumped corners; text block tight and square; one illustration missing; both hinges beginning to split but this has not significantly weakened the tightness of spine; 273 clean pages, showing signs of tanning CC.

Baltimore: William H. Purnell, 1866. Pamphlet. Good. 7 p.; 23 cm. In March 1866 William H. Purnell (1826-1902), who had been appointed postmaster of Baltimore by President Lincoln in 1861, was up for confirmation to a post, possibly assessor of internal revenue for Baltimore. The only objection to him was a charge that he had made a speech at a Democratic and Conservative meeting in Oct. 1865. He offered this reply, explaining how he happened to be present when a speaker denounced President Johnson for his actions toward the southern states after the Civil War ended and consequently intervened to prevent violence. He also offered a statement covering his vigorous support for the Union during the war. Scarce. In Good Condition: soiled and creased; closed 1-cm. tear from fore-edges; solid.

Very short closed tear at right margin; small piece of tape on reverse. Uncommon Civil War map showing the Battle of Port Royal. Publisher unknown, but probably contemporary. The Battle of Port Royal was one of the earliest amphibious operations of the American Civil War, in which a United States Navy fleet and United States Army expeditionary force captured Port Royal Sound, South Carolina, between Savannah, Georgia and Charleston, South Carolina, on November 7, 1861. The sound was guarded by two forts on opposite sides of the entrance, Fort Walker on Hilton Head Island to the south and Fort Beauregard on Phillip's Island to the north.

The binding shows light rubbing and wear, but overall a clean and attractive copy. Patterned endpapers. Text is toned. John McElhenney (1781-1871) was a Presbyterian minister born in Waxhaws, South Carolina and went to Washington College in 1802. Thereafter he went to Princeton. After he became a preacher, he was sent to the Old Stone Church in Lewisburg, Virginia (now West Virginia) along the Greenbriar River. He delivered his first sermon there in 1808 and remained at the same church for over 60 years. This volume contains a chapter on his service during the Civil War and as West Virginia separated from Virginia.
