The three works exclude "annuals and gift books, publications of the American Tract Society and the Sunday School Union, juveniles, Indian captivities, jestbooks. Folklore, anthologies, collections of anecdotes, periodicals, and extra numbers of periodicals." - from the introduction. Intended to serve as a guide to American fiction rather than as a complete descriptive bibliography. [ The first ] volume attempts to list all American editions, whereas the subsequent volumes list only the first or earliest located edition of a title."- Balay.
