London: printed for J. Almon, 1780. Full Leather. Good binding. Octavo. [2], viii, 127, [1] pp. First edition. Bound in contemporary calf with red morocco title label on the spine; spine desiccated and darkened; weak at the center; front board has been tastefully reattached; rear board weak; lacking initial advertisement leaf; toning to some signatures, but largely a clean copy;. Anonymous tract penned by Pownall, a British official sympathetic to the American colonists and Governor of the Province of the Massachusetts Bay. In it Pownall argues that European leaders would do well to recognize the economic trade opportunities of the newly formed United States. ESTC N4078, Sabin 64826, Howes P-542 "aa". Bound with "Observations on the Nature of Civil Liberty. . ." by Richard Price. London: printed for T. Cadell, 1776. Third edition. [8], 128p. Half title is present; contents are clean and bright. This is a very early edition of Price's essay in support of American independence. The essay caused quite a stir in England and was reprinted several times in 1776. ESTC T41825.

1848 Mississippi Exploration Indian Wars Color MAP Western Americana Monette

'History of the discovery and settlement of the valley of the Mississippi' is the history of the Americas along and around the Mississippi river. It is told primarily from the perspective of the Indian Wars between Native Americans and France, Spain, and Great Britain.
"The first volume is principally occupied with a relation of the French and Spanish discovery of the territory, and the association of the colonial governments of these nations with the Indians, and their wars with the various tribes inhabiting it. Much of the larger portion of Vol. II. is devoted to a narration of the Indian wars of the States bordering the Ohio. The work is probably the best of the numerous class of books on the subject of western history" (Field).

This 1848 edition includes:
·
First Spanish discoveries in Florida 1512 to 1538 --
·
Exploration of the Mississippi River by La Salle: his colony on the Colorado 1673 to 1696 -… Leer más

A two-volume first edition of an account of the Long Expedition to the Rocky Mountains by expedition botanist and geologist Edwin James. Compiled from the notes of Major Stephen H. Long, Mr. T. Say, and other gentlemen of the party by Mr. James. This rather scarce set presents the account of the experiences of the Stephen H. Long expedition of 1819-1820, in which Long was sent to find the source of the Platte River in the Rocky Mountains. Lacks the separate accompanying oversize atlas which was issued in 1822 per Howes J.41, who remarks [the expedition was notable in that it supplemented] ". . .earlier discoveries of Pike and of Lewis and Clark, and pronouncing the plains region as nothing but a desert, incapable of cultivation!". --- In maroon half leather and marbled paper-covered boards with gilt-stamped spine titling, four raised bands to spines and marbled endpapers. --- A very nice set, with bright, mostly… Leer más

Bruxelles: Librairie historique-artistique, 1843. First edition. 4 large in-8 volumes, (270 mm x 170 mm). Midnight blue half-sheepskin binding, embossed percaline covers, spines have gilt titles and decoration. Illustrated with hand coloured / hand finished engraved plates. These were created by the leading illustrators of the time, including Duverger, L. Markaert, R. King. The bindings are in very good condition, with a little rubbing to the edges only. Inside, the text and plates have light foxing throughout, but are overall in very good condition. Each copy online offers a different number of plates for each of the four volumes - but our copy seems to match the maximum collation for each variation (so seems complete.) The index is of limited use, as it only lists a proportion of the plates. In addition to the four title vignettes, we have: Europe (1844). 364 pages, 49 plates; Asie (1845). 592 pages, 82 plates; L'Afrique et l'Amérique (1844), 368 pages, 43 plates; l'Océanie (1845) 368 pages… Leer más

This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, spine, edges and corner of the cover. There is some dog-earring on the right corner pages of the book. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art

This book is in good condition. There is a lot of wear on the front, back, spine and edges of the cover boards. There is also a substantial amount of staining on the cover boards. The pages are yellowed and tanned. There are also markings throughout the book. "The roots of this book reach back to the early 1950s in Paris, where I began my professional career as a journalist. France, supported by the United States, was then fighting to retain its hold in Indochina against the Vietminh, the Communist-led nationalist movement there. As I reported on the French end of the war, I soon became acquainted with the names and places in Vietnam from a distance, But I scarcely imagined that they were to be part of my own experience. Then, in 1959, I was assigned to cover eastern Asia; the region that included Vietnam became my beat for more than two decades. I visited Vietnam most recently in 1981 for seven weeks, the longest permitted an American correspondent since the Communists gained control of the entire… Leer más

Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.
