When the American Expeditionary Forces embarked for France after the United States entered World War I, they were accompanied by 9000 American Red Cross nueses. According to Ms. Pickett, "[t]wo out of every three Navy nurses and four out of every five Army nurses were Red Cross Nurses." [page 45].
