Hartford: Case, Tiffany and Burnham, 1848. Very good. 2 vols. Original publisher's black leather bindings, stamped in gold, all edges gilt, endpapers plain. A few very minor, unobtrusive repairs. Occasionally heavy foxing throughout, as commonly. GORGEOUS COPY. The elaborate center- and cornerpieces on the present binding must be seen to be fully appreciated. Whereas embossed bindings by Hartford publisher Case, Tiffany and Burnham are recorded in Wolf, "From Gothic Windows to Peacocks" the present bindings do not because they are STAMPED, not embossed (we are grateful to Michael Zinman for pointing this out to us). Our bindings are preserved in beautiful state, suitable for exhibition.
Patton's Cottage Bible remains an excellent example of American book arts at this date, as it is enriched with etchings and engravings by American artists F. Kearney, W. Keenan, J.A. Adams, A. Dick, M. Osbourne, James Smillie, and J.B. Longacre. The work seems to have been largely ignored by specialists, no doubt due to the fact that it is almost always found in poor condition.
No copy in the Library Company, one of the great repositories of American publisher's leather bindings of this date.
