Sobre este artículo

London: George Virtue, 1840. Hardcover. Good + condition. Two volumes bound in one. The engravings provide some lovely Bartlett views of the Hudson River Valley, such as View From West Point, Crow's Nest from Bull Hill, View From Ruggle's House, Newburgh, Peekskill Landing, and Indian Falls near Cold Spring.

Arguably Bartlett's most famous work. He visited Canada and the United States repeatedly and the illustrations show many of the principal cities of North America as well as the most famous scenic vistas of the day. There are also plates of Boston (Faneuil Hall), New York (The Ferry at Brooklyn), Washington DC (View of the Capitol), and the Catskill Mountains.

Thick 4to, frontispiece, iv, 140pp, map, 66 engravings; Vol II: iv, 106pp, 52 plates. All edges gilt; marbled end papers. Period brown stamped leather with gilt title at spine, raised bands. Covers rubbed at corners and spine ends. Internally, damp stain to margins of 2 plates in Vol II; the majority of the plates bright and clean, with some foxing to plates in the second volume. Rear inner hinge starting.

Previous owner bookplate, D. C. Linsley. This is Daniel Chapman Linsley (born Vermont), a railroad engineer who in 1870 traveled 650 miles charting new territory almost solely inhabited by Native Americans, in the search for a route through the Cascades (from the Clarke River Valley to Puget Sound) for the Northern Pacific Railway. OCLC: 6833271.
