[AMISTAD]. Broadside Print, Death of Capt. Ferrer, the Captain of the Amistad, July, 1839. Original hand coloring. Originally appeared with an 1840 New Haven Pamphlet, A History of the Amistad Captives...Also An Account of the Trials.

The caption reads: "Don Jose Ruiz and Don Pedro Montez, of the Island of Cuba, having purchased fifty-three slaves at Havana, recently imported from Africa, put them on board the Amistad, Capt. Ferrer, in order to transport them to Principe, another port on the Island of Cuba. After being out from Havana about four days, the African captives on board, in order to obtain their freedom, and return to Africa, armed themselves with cane knives, and rose upon the Captain and crew of the vessel. Capt. Ferrer and the cook of the vessel were killed; two of the crew escaped; Ruiz and Montez were made prisoners."

On July 2, 1839, slaves aboard the Spanish schooner Amistad staged a revolt off the coast of Cuba, killing Captain Ramon Ferrer and the ship's cook. They were taken into custody by the United States' Navy near Long Island on August 26 and brought to Connecticut. Charges were filed alleging mutiny and murder, but the Circuit Court ruled that it lacked jurisdiction because the mutiny had occurred on a Spanish ship in Spanish waters. Various parties then filed property claims to the slaves, and the Spanish government asked that the ship, cargo and slaves be restored to Spain under the Pinckney Treaty of 1795.

In 1840, a federal trial found that the initial transport (not involving the Amistad) of the Africans across the Atlantic had been illegal and that they were not legally slaves but free. The U.S. Supreme Court [case 40 U.S. (15 Pet.) 215] affirmed this finding on March 9, 1841, and the men were returned to Africa in 1842.

New York. 1970. September 1970. Random House. 1st Edition. Very Good in Dustjacket . 308 pages. hardcover. Cover: Romare Bearden. keywords: Literature Black America Anthology Politics History. FROM THE PUBLISHER - ‘This first issue should leave no doubt in anyone's mind from what sector of American life tin most penetrating thinking and writing is now coming. Amistad challenges American arts and letters by presenting alternative interpretations of America and the West, with particular emphasis in this issue on history and literature. Gayle's essay is a fine example of the black esthetic at work, questioning the unquestioned assumption and providing a long overdue reassessment and evaluation of American literature. This essay should become mandatory reading In American literature courses. It is that important. Amistad has made an exciting beginning, and its impact on college campuses as well as the white literary and academic establishment should be profound.' - New York Times Book… Leer más
