Directeur de l'Institut français du Caire et des fouilles de Dendara, créateur en 1970 de la chaire d'Égyptologie de l'Université de Montpellier, auteur de La civilisation de l'Égypte pharaonique (Arthaud) et des Dieux de l'Égypte (PUF), François Daumas (1915-84) était avant tout un grand spécialiste de la religion égyptiennne. Dans ce livre, il met en lumière, à partir de nombreux textes inconnus (dont il donne souvent la première traduction) l'existence dans l'Égypte ancienne, au delà de la magie et de la religion populaire, d'une véritable mystique, qui marquera la Grèce et le Judaïsme et s'épanouira dans le Christianisme et l'Islam.
