A study into ancient law and its connection with the society of the time, with chapters on legal fictions, laws of nature and equity, primitive society, testamentary succession, ancient and modern ideas of wills and successions, history of property, contract, delict and crime. The object of the work was "to indicate some of the earliest ideas of mankind, as they are reflected in ancient law, and to point out the relation of those ideas to modern thought." Written by Sir Henry James Sumner Maine, a British Whig comparative jurist and historian. Bound in half brown calf with brown cloth boards. Externally, smart with light shelf wear and rubbing to the extremities. Minor fading to the spine and the odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean.
