Camden, William (1551-1623), historian and herald; antiquarian interests; educator and administrator; born on 2 May 1551 at the Old Bailey, London; long, complex relationship with the University of Oxford until the end of his life (in 1622, endowed a chair for the first lectureship in civil history at Oxford); bachelor's degree 1574; appointment in 1575 as second master at Westminster School; headmaster from 1593 to 1597; installed as Clarenceux king of arms (one of three senior heralds in the College of Arms) 23 October 1597; compiled a Greek grammar; for the [work] Britannia, he developed his own approach to empirical research into topographical and historical study through extensive travel, archival scholarship, and the use of original documents, along with the deployment of linguistic and philological evidence, artefacts, and testimony drawn from the physical landscape; work in numismatics; Remaines of a Greater Worke Concerning Britain can be seen as a popular spin-off from the Britannia; in Anglica, Normannica, Hibernica, Cambrica, a veteribus scripta, Camden edited chronicles of the Middle Age; Annales rerum Anglicarum, et Hibernicarum, regnante Elizabetha, or the History of Elizabeth was the first biography of Elizabeth I; died at Chislehurst on 9 November 1623 in his 73rd year)
