I: xxiii, [1], 504, [8 - index] with large folding, engraved plate of a lioness and her whelps; vol. II: [2], 554; vol. III: [2], 580. Contents vol. II quadrupeds, whales, birds; vol. III: amphibious animals, fishes, insects, worms. Contemporary half brown calf with marbled paper boards, red and black title labels to gilt decorated spine. Bindings good with a some rubbing to edges, several cracks to joints inconspicuously repaired and all boards firmly attached, light chipping to the heads of the spines and corners worn and bumped. Contents very good, clean and tight. Frontispiece to vol. 1 a little creased with several expert paper repairs to the underside. [Provenance: with the armorial bookplate and signature of Henry Birkbeck to the front end paper: Norfolk family of High House estate at West Acre, Norfolk, with Grade I listed house built in 1756.] A good to very good set of the second edition..
