Sobre este artículo
Scattered light foxing. Frontis. and title page closely trimmed. A few vertical marginal closed tears. Expert restoration to joints, spine ends and corners. Occasional old ink marginalia. Endpapers with brief pencil notations regarding bibliography and provenance. With the armorial bookplate of noted Victorian antiquarian and bibliophile James Comerford, whose library was sold by Sotheby's in 1881. First edition in English of the first three books of Camden's Annales, later state of the title-page with Fisher's address and the date present but without Darcie's name.
Having distinguished himself, with wide renown, upon publication of the Britannia (1586), the effort of which was "'to restore Britain to Antiquity, and Antiquity to Britain," Camden embarked on further scholarship, including the work at-hand.
Initially published as Annales rerum Anglicarum, et Hibernicarum, regnante Elizabetha (1615-1617), the history of Elizabeth was encouraged by Burghley, who provided Camden "with private papers of his own and 'Rolls, Memorials, and Records' from the queen's own archives" (DNB).That access, along with use of Robert Cotton's library and proximity to the actors in Elizabeth's court, were critical to the accuracy of the work. Camden's History celebrated Elizabeth at a time when Elizabethan literary tastes were enjoying a revival.
Simultaneously, Camden cemented his seminal stature as the father of contemporary historiography. Per Printing and the Mind of Man, "Camden has some claim to be considered as the founder, not merely of antiquarian studies, but also the study of modern history" (101). Spenser celebrates his position in The Ruines of Time, "Cambden, the nourice of antiquitie / And lanterne unto late succeeding age."
The famous and elaborate frontispiece reflects the nostalgic cult of Elizabeth - a cult enhanced by Camden's scholarship. A distinguished copy in a gorgeous period binding.
