Exhibited A Wounded Heron (1837); won prize (1842) for cartoon Caractacus; won British competition in oils (1847) with King Alfred; commissioned to fresco George and the Dragon in Hall of Poets of the Houses of Parliament (1848-53). Painted series of about 300 portraits of distinguished contemporaries (1864-95), including Garibaldi, Thiers, Guizot; painted symbolical pictures and moral allegories including Life' s Illusions (1849), Watchman, What of the Night (1880), Hope (1886), Love and Death (1877, 1896); as sculptor executed monuments including bronze equestrian statues of Hugo Lupus (1884) and Physical Energy (1904).
