Endpapers are illustrated with maps, 4 different maps showing 4 different expedition routes. Pale blue boards with gilt writing on the spine. Photographic dustwrapper, showing the ship, 'Terra Nova', in broken ice 17 January 1911. This book deals with four expeditions to Antarctica between 1919 - 14. The expeditions: 1901- 1904 led by Scott,1908-1909 by Shackleton, 1910-1912 by Amundsen and the last again by Scott in 1910-1913. The expeditions either failed, or were successful depending upon its leader, and his ability to inspire his team to achieve seemingly impossible goals. The author calls this era "The Heroic Age" as expeditions "were dependent on man alone without the help or advantages of mechanical inventions.". a very nice clean copy, no damage, no annotations.
