Thomas Salmon was an English historian known for his extensive reviews, reports, and guides to European travel. He was thorough in his descriptions on various countries, particularly England and Italy. In his 'Universal Traveler', an enormous collection of travel guides, Salmon provides a report on the current situation within the country, designed for those visiting the country, as well as historical context for the illustrations.
This volume focuses on the history of China, descriptions of Japan and the Philippines, as well as other South Asian islands. Like many Salmon tomes, this example includes impressive full-page engravings of Asian worship practices, costumes, music, architecture, and even maps.

1537 1ed Orthodox Saint John Chrysostom On the Priesthood + Brixius Marburg

A rare 16th-century printing of works of John Chrysostom. Chrysostom was one of the most important Early Christian Church authors and preachers and is most remembered for his sermons and homilies. He preached on many different subjects, but his most frequented topic was helping the needy. Chrysostom calls for followers of Jesus to set aside their material desires to help the poor, often in a way that shamed the rich and guilted them in to giving.

One of his most important treatises was 'On the Priesthood' in which he describes his experiences becoming a priest and living as a priest. Interestingly, this work was popular during his lifetime as he made references to it in his other works.

The 'Roman de la Rose' is a famous 13th-century Medieval French poem written as an allegorical dream sequence. It was written by Guillaume de Lorris who sought to express the feelings of romantic love, sexuality, and chivalry. It was completed by Jean de Meung who continued the work begun by Lorris. Thought to be the most widely read book other than the Bible in the 13th- and 14th-centuries, it was highly influential on other authors, notably including Geoffrey Chaucer.
