London: Printed by Thomas Harrison [later: Edward Johnston] in Warwick Lane, 2/5 January to 25/28 December 1790.. A slightly broken run of over 90 issues encompassing (with exceptions noted below) whole numbers 13163 through 13268. Small folio. Chiefly 4 or 8pp per number. Extracted, with residue of old binding along spine; moderate tide-mark in lower margin through first half of volume, revenue stamps as usual, occasional marginal discolorations limited to individual issues; still, good and crisp. A close to full year's issues of the original official newspaper of record in England. It was founded in November 1665, while the Court was resident in Oxford due to the plague in London, and the early numbers appeared as the OXFORD GAZETTE. Shortly after the Court returned to London, beginning with whole number 24, the name was altered to reflect the change, and it persisted through the following centuries as the publisher of official information in regard to politics, business, public notices, elections… Leer más

Ernest Nister. London. Printed in Nuremberg. ND. 1888. FIRST, AND ONLY, PRINTING OF THIS EDITION. Folio. (15 x 11.7 inches). Illustrated with six stunning full colour chromolithographic plates and twenty-seven sepia vignettes throughout the text. The artist is Julius Höppner, a master of fairy and fantasy illustration. Original white cloth with elaborate full gilt decoration to spine and front board, which also has a sunken panel, with a bevelled gilt tooled edge, where a full colour illustration is placed. Silk patterned paper endpapers. All edges gilt. Binding a bit loose. The board edges are rubbed and marked & there is some minor foxing to most pages but overall this is a near to very good copy of a truly beautiful book.

Buchgewerbeklasse der gewerblichen Berutsfchule Hamborn. Germany. Christmas 1938. LIMITED EDITION. One of 50 copies printed. (9.5 x 6.9 inches). Illustrated with hand coloured lettering and illustration to the title page and 24 hand coloured lino cut illustrations, each one above two verses of printed text. On the blank pages opposite somebody has written out in a neat early hand the English translation of the first 15 sets of verse. Possibly inscribed by the author, in English, on the blank leaf opposite the title page 'To Muriel with much love and best wishes! Christmas 1938. Franz and Elizabeth'. Original oatmeal coloured paper covered boards with title printed in outline and hand coloured, to the front panel. Spine of the outer wrapper is split, a little chipped and edges rubbed but overall a very good copy of this charming and rare book. No copies listed on Copac or Worldcat.

(6.8 x 4.4 inches). vii, 112pp. A very good clean copy in a fine late nineteenth or early twentieth century arts and crafts style leather binding of full red morocco. Spine with decorative floral design in gilt and two curved-edged brown onlay labels, lettered and bordered in gilt. Front board with elaborate gilt floral design within a double ruled border. Brown onlay panel, lettered in gilt, and onlaid bow and several small leaves in green leather. Board edges with thick and thin gilt ruled cross lines. Turn ins decorated with gilt flowers to the outer corners. Marbled endpapers. Top edge gilt, the others untrimmed. The first English edition, published the same year as the original Brussels edition. The binding is not signed but is certainly the work of a master bookbinder. A beautiful and skilfully executed binding.

This work, which takes its name from the 'Corpus Juris' of Justinian, is an interesting deviation from the standard Roman law but is often considered one of the best works on canon law from the early 18th-century.

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1949. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Here is a full set of U.S. editions of Churchill's postwar speeches in the scarce dust jackets. These volumes span the period from immediately after the second World War, when Churchill was Leader of the Opposition, through the end of 1952, during his second Premiership. The events encompassed by these years are in many ways no less dramatic than those of the war years - the unraveling of the British Empire, the post-war recovery, the beginning of the Cold War, Soviet acquisition of the atomic bomb and U.S. invention of the hydrogen bomb. The U.S. postwar speeches were published in very small numbers, making jacketed U.S. editions much rarer than their British counterparts. One gathering slightly sprung. Publishers dark green cloth with gilt and black decorative band across the top of the front board and the top and bottom of the spine. Black decorative roll to the bottom of the front board. Title on gilt to the middle of the front board. Spine lettered and decorated in gilt. Rear board with blind stamped floral roll to the top and bottom. Floral decorative endpapers. Neat two line inscription to the front free endpaper. The rear endpapers have an early previous owner's name and address written in red crayon to the free endpaper and a few short lines to the pastedown. This book is bound with leather covers and a cloth spine. There is a label on the front cover which is not readable. New endsheets have been added at some point in the book's long history, but the original endsheets and covers are present. There is a former owner's inscription on the original front endsheet. Pages are intact and the binding is tight. The book contains black & white drawings of muscles, bones, and bandages. There is an index for medicines and an extensive table of contents of body parts, diseases, syndromes, and treatments. Printed in the year 1846, the book itself is, in essence, a time capsule that portrays how medicine was practiced aboard an early nineteenth century sailing ship. This will make a wonderful addition to the library of the collector of medical memorabilia.
