The first edition in book form.John Henry Newman's ardent defence of his religious opinions, written as a response to attacks from Charles Kingsley. Newman quit his position as an Anglican Vicar of St. Mary's, Oxford, in 1845, alongside some of his followers. He was welcome by the Catholic Church and converted to Catholicism, where he became an influential priest and religious leader based in Birmingham, later being created a cardinal by Pope Leo XIII. An important insight into the religious strife of the nineteenth century, and the Oxford Movement. Label of the Grundy Library, Malvern College, to the front paste down.Ink note to the verso of the front endpaper In a full morocco binding. Externally, rubbed. Crack to the head of the front joint, smaller crack to the tail. Small surface cracks to the head of the spine. Torn label to the tail of the spine. Bumping to the extremities. A small amount of loss to the head of the spine. Front hinge is strained. Rear hinge is starting. Library label and bookseller's label to the front paste down, with further institutional labels to the rear paste down and verso of the rear endpaper. Rear endpaper and rear free are working loose. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with some scattered spots, to the first and last few pages. Good

Where are We?
Based in the literary city of Bath, our offices are housed in the Eastern Dispensary. Built in 1845, the building originally existed as a charitable institution providing medical care. The building now houses our collection of over twenty thousand books and has five full time members of staff.
