Birmingham: John Baskerville, 1765 . Leather. Good Only. 12" by 10". None. The first Baskerville edition of the influential Scottish Quaker Robert Barclay's theological 'vindication' of the Quaker doctrine. The eighth edition in English of this work, but the first to be published by John Baskerville. The work was first published in Latin in Amsterdam in 1676.With the inscription of Robert Barclay to the head of a front endpaper, and a charming further inscription to the same leaf: 'this book was given to my father Rev A Watt by Robert Barclay'. Due to the publication of this edition being after the author's death, this Robert Barclay is likely one of the seven children of the author, with the eldest boy being named after his father.Subtitled 'an explanation and vindication of the principles and doctrines of the people called Quakers', the work is termed by the Dictionary of National Biography as 'the standard exposition of the principles of his sect, and 'in many respects one of the most impressive…

Birmingham: John Baskerville, 1765. Eighth Edition (in English). Hardcover. Near Very Good. 4to. [9], iii-xiii, [1], 2-504, [16] pp. Contemporary calf boards with the spine in six compartments, gilt decorations on the spine and a later morocco label lettered in gilt on the spine. Bound without the errata leaf. The eighth edition in English, the first Baskerville edition. Gaskell 30. Oxford DNB, Gordon DesBrisay, "Barclay, Robert, of Ury (1648-1690)". First published in English 1678, Barclay's work has remained a cornerstone text in Quaker theology and history. Barclay lived through the persecution of Quakers in Scotland, and spent time in prison for his beliefs. He viewed his writings as necessary to winning sympathy for the Quakers from politicians and royalty. His impact on the sect is noted as "disproportionate". Historical sources call him a "charismatic speaker" and a "gifted controversialist". Barclay was a significant organizer of the Quaker movement, and helped to spread the word about the…

Birmingham: John Baskerville, 1765. Eighth (first Baskerville) edition in English, (first published Aberdeen, 1676); 4to, pp. [14], [ii]-xiii, 504, [16]; with the errata leaf as part of the preliminaries which is "frequently missing" (Gaskell); original blue paper-covered boards, uncut and partially unopened; neat cream paper rebacking, preserving the original printed paper label, in a red half morocco clamshell box (scuffed); a very good, sound copy. This copy with a very nice inscription: "David Barclay / Grandson of the Author / to Lord Sidney. / In testimony of his respect. / 1789." Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount Sydney PC (1733-1800), was a British politician who held several important Cabinet posts in the second half of the 18th century. His most enduring legacy is probably that the cities of Sydney in Nova Scotia, and Sydney in Australia were named in his honor, in 1785 and 1788 respectively. Gaskell notes that "no uncut copy has been seen." This copy is uncut and partially unopened. The…
