Stories were translated over time from Arabic to French to English near 1704. They came from the collection then of M. Galland, numbering 264 "bewildering, unparalleled stories" (Wiggin preface). She notes of the 10 tales herein, nothing has been eliminated nor altered save repetitions in some of the originals from Muslim Arab storytellers. The Maxfield Parrish paintings used here are among his most valued today. Only 'The History of the Young King of the Black Isles' is not represented by Parrish.
