Frontispiece portrait, 85, (2) pages, 60 plates. First edition, thus. [Hitchcock, 971]. Designs for villas and cottages in a variety of styles which were derived fro English pattern books by such architects as Goodwin, Hunt & Robinson. Ranlet is an important 19th-century architect whose book was one of the first to sho the house as part of its environment giving placement for gardens, fences and walkways. The designs were adapted to American conditions within their landscapes (of which plans are attached). His house designs are quite eclect including examples in Grecian, Egyptian, Tudor, Anglo-Italian, and other styl Volume II, which was printed two years after Volume I, shows houses built by Ranlett on Staten Island and elsewhere in New York state, also in Long Branch and Morristown, New Jersey. A Ranlett design taken from, plates 19 and 20, design XXXI in this volume, was adapted by architect Jacob Holt for Eureka, t residence of the Baskervile family in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, done in t Italianate Villa style. Each design is shown by a tinted lithographic plate its elevation, with accompanying plates of plans and details. The second vol contains 31 designs on 60 plates. Text sporatically foxed, front and rear bl leaves creased. Tips of spine and hinges show wear. Scarce in printed and decorated paper covered boards which include an advertisement from Ranlett on the back.
