Archive of New York Farmers Edward C. and Emily Henrotin

Berlin, New York, 1931. A remarkable archive of material belonging to Edward C. (b.1872) and Emily (b.1884) Henrotin, farmers active in Rensselaer County, New York, in the 1920s. Emily was an active conservationist, and one of the first women to be recognized in her field; her husband Edward was equally well-respected in agricultural circles. Correspondence, photographs, newspaper clippings, and memoir material is represented. The archive paints a picture of a hard working family's contributions to agricultural science and conservation in America c.1920s.

Twenty-three (23) photographs and photographic postcards of the Henrotin property in Berlin, New York, produced c.1920, ranging in size from 3.75" by 3.5" to 6" by 9.75".

Printed Christmas card from "Edward, Emily and Blair Henrotin" with map of their property and upstate New York on verso. Measures 4.5" by 5".

Two (2) manuscript drafts of contracts dated 1922 between Edward Henrotin and business associates concerning agricultural work. Measures 10" by 7.75" and 7" by 6", [4] pp. and [14] pp., respectively.

Two (2) undated newspaper clippings featuring "Plant a Barn", a poem by Emily, and a modern reproduction of a newspaper article about Emily titled "Cherry Plain Woman Named Farmer of '55" for her all round contributions to soil conservation which included construction and diversion of soil dtiches, strip-cropping, contour farming, woodland protection and improvement, reforestation and other factors.

Twenty-one (21) typewritten and manuscript letters and reports addressed to Edward C. and Emily Henrotin. Correspondents include other farmers, prominent agricultural schools (Illinois, Cornell), Country Life magazine. Includes registers of egg-laying hens, flock reports, and business inquiries. Most on company letterhead, dated between 1922 and 1927.

Printed "Patrons of Husbandry" slip signed in contemporary ink manuscript certifying that both Edward and Emily Henrotin are "members in good standing of Berlin Grange No. 966". Measures 3.5" by 5.5", verso blank. Dated 1931.

Original typewritten and manuscript memoir material (8.5" by 11", [14] pp), apparently by Emily, detailing her life experiences, as well as one leaf with a poem titled "Mending Wall" measuring 9" by 6.5". Berlin, 1930s.
