Colburn & Co, London, 1852. First Edition. Hardcover. Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Size: Octavo (standard book size). xviii, 347 pp. Text is compiled from a newspaper - the "Aurora Borealis" - published aboard one of the four ships of the expedition in 1850 which set out in search of Sir John Franklin. The small squadron was trapped in the ice for nearly 12 months, during which time commanders, officers, and crew contributed musings on a variety of subjects, some humorous, some scientific. Amongst their regrets of home and country they feared not seeing the Great Exhibition, however they did return to London in time to see the last week of the famous Exhibition. The pages of the Aurora Borealis are a reflection of the harmony and good-fellowship, the order and Christian union which prevailed in the Expedition. Ex college library copy in 3/4 dark green calf binding over cloth boards. Gilt decorated spine in 6 compartments. Boards lightly worn and rubbed but gilt still bright. Book plate on front paste down. Illustrated with colored lithograph frontispiece (foxed and neatly repaired), wood engraved title page vignette and several engravings in the text. Some occasional foxing to contents and tiny corner chips to to several pages. Overall a very clean crisp copy Quantity Available: 1. Category: Exploration; Arctic; 19th century; Antiquarian & Rare.
