Jeannette Mirsky (1903-1987), an author and historian, first published this work as To The North! in 1934, by Viking press. From the dust jacket, that edition was withdrawn shortly after publication because of a libel-action threat by the late Dr. Fredrick A. Cook. Mirsky had written about Cook's reaching the North Pole as "...exciting and well-written, but ...mainly fiction...". This book has been revised and enlarged with new material from the Russian explorations in the late 1930's [from the Arctic Bibliography]. From the introduction by Vilhjamur Stefansson, "...the best history of northern exploration so far written...
