New York; (1939): Harper & Brothers. First Edition. Octavo. 278pp. This was the book used by the screenwriter, Claude Binyon, shooting on location near Tucson. William Holden was given the lead role when Gary Cooper had other movie commitments. Besides Holden's and Binyon's signatures, the book also has been signed by William Warren, Porter Hal, Paul Harvey, George Chandler, Byron Fouger, Regis Toomey, Paul Lopez, Colin Tapley, Syd Saylor, Gayle Decamp, George Hoey, Joseph McDonald, Stub Musselman, Fred Parker, and various people in making the film. What is particularly nice is that The Arizona Daily Star (May 3, 1940) has a 12-page spread on the film with biographies of some of the various actors, the assistance of the Arizona Historical Society, and many of the businesses who supplied the wood, glass, and materials for the various sets. Originally, the idea was to make the film in Hollywood, but Claude Binyon convinced Columbia Pictures needed that the story required "The natural and authentic settings for Arizona". This would require reconstructing old Tucson as the mud-adobe down in once had been. In one spectacular scene, the town's inhabitants watch as the Union troops set fire to everything in their path as they withdraw. Since they had to be certain much of the story would not conflict some of the families in the book might object so their permission would have to be obtained. Mrs. Pauline Kitt of the Pioneer Society and her records checked for accuracy on the early history of Tucson and its environs. Since Binyon's hobby was old guns of the West, he enjoyed the additional research in Arizona. Other signers were Tony of the Santa Rita Lounge which supplied the food, Paul Muntz, the ex-racing car driver and Hollywood car dealer who supplied the Hollywood market with a parade of fine cars who was on the set. Ray Bearley, who was the Business Manager and some names unidentified possibly local people or technical staff. Bound in orange cloth lettered in blue, spine lettering blue, tiny tears to spine ends, light wear to corners, rear hinge is cracked but not though binding, in unclipped pictorial dust jacket with chipping along the edges.
