Sobre este artículo

Although this Book is a Grosset Library Edition, it is Not Ex-Library. This Book is Conservatively Graded in Good Condition. The Dust Jacket has some Soiling (noticeable as the Dust Jacket is white), a Very Small, Drop-sized Stain at the Top Edge of the Front Cover, and a Few Small, 3/8" long or Smaller Tears and associated Creases along the Edges, but the Dust Jacket has No Other Major Damage and is in Better Condition than this description makes it seem. The Hardcover Boards retain Sharp Corners with No Tears, Creases, Stains, or Any Major Damage. The Binding is Strong, Intact, and Undamaged. The Interior is Clean and Unmarked with No Writing, Highlighting, or Underlining with the Exception of a Former Owner's Name on the Front End Page and has No Tears, Creases, Stains, Mold, or Any Major Damage. The Page Edges have No Remainder Mark, Foxing, Stains, or Any Major Damage.. Book Description: When blacks were finally allowed to enlist in the Union army during the Civil War, they did so enthusiastically. For the most part, those troops were commanded by white officers with some black non-commissioned officers. Although many white officers did not want to command black troops, certain white officers did so enthusiastically and made a name for themselves and their men. One of those outstanding officers was Col. Thomas W. Higginson, who assumed command in late 1862 of the First South Carolina Volunteers. Col. Higginson, in the form of a diary and some recollections, tells of the adventures of his men, who made up the first black regiment mustered into the service of the United States. The colonel found his men to be strong, good natured, and excellent soldiers despite the fact that almost none of them were legally free; they were either runaways or slaves who were left to fend for themselves when their Southern masters retreated from Union occupation. These pages, written with great humor, reflect the warmth and respect Col. Higginson felt for his troops, who he commanded until a combat wound forced him to resign in May, 1864.
