Mrs. Barroll was the wife of Commander Henry Harris Barroll of the United States Navy and the Hydrographic Office in Washington D.C. following his retirement in 1899. her "toothsome" recipes are "gleaned from many sources in many lands" as well as "heirlooms" from New England and the South.
