London: Eveleigh Nash & Grayson, 1923. Hardcover. Very good. Red cloth boards, octavo, not illustrated. Book has spotting and toning to boards and spine, mild wear to spine ends and corners, binding tight, front flyleaf off-set and has previous owner's info in ink, text has mild foxing and toning throughout and to edges, with one signature (pages 165-180) bound in upside down [all pages present, just a weird mistake].
Sinopsis
Set in the 1870s, this tale concerns the love of an English sea captain for the Spanish beauty Dona Rita. He carries Carlist munitions to Peninsular ports, she finances the project. Conrad recounts all the adventures of gun-running and the ever-threatening sea, but never loses his theme, the beautiful and transitory nature of love. Conrad treasured this story, and explained it as a fragment from his "buried youth."
