Book Description: The professions of medicine, science, and art have had a close relationship in America, where the sciences and the arts have often intermingled. This book, which accompanies an exhibition of the same title, sets out to explain some of those relationships in a new and fresh way. In fact, little has been written on the artist's view of American medicine and science, and so this book is a major contribution to the study of the history of American art. Some of the artists whose work is featured in this book are Charles Willson Peale, Thomas Sully, Samuel F. B. Morse, George Catlin, Winslow Homer, Thomas Eakins, John Singer Sargent, George Wesley Bellows, Stuart Davis, Andrew Wyeth, John Sloan, Grant Wood, Andy Warhol, and others.
