The Home Of Books , Inc., 1939. Soft Cover. Near Fine. An excellent , SIGNED copy of this unusal Lincoln item , LIMITED to 400 copies . The publication was prepared by Ralph Geoffrey Newman , founder of The Home Of Books ( later The Abraham Lincoln Book Shop ) , for the Christmas season , 1939 . In keeping with the season and with Ward's mirth , the stiff wrap covers are a festive red . Introduction by Newman and Theodore S. Charrney . Artemas Ward ( Charles Farrar Browne ) was Lincoln's favorite comedian and Lincoln enjoyed quoting his stories and his dialect , much to the dismay of some of his more restrained friends . The dialect .sketch material was first published in Vanity Fair on December 8 , 1860 . Newman's neatly designed Christmas calling card is tipped-in on the first free endpaper and his signature is also tipped-in .
