Sobre este artículo

ZOMPINI, GAETANO GHERARDO (1700-1778)

Title:

LE ARTI CHE VANNO PER VIA NELLA CITTA DI VENEZIA

INVENTATE ED INCISE.

With Aggiuntavi una memoria di detto Autore.

Size: Folio. 40.7 x 30 cm. 16 x 11.8 inches.

Description : Etched(aqua forte) Frontispiece and Title, Letterpress Memoria on both sides of one sheet. Etched Index and 54 full page illustrations of the 60 called for.

Lacking numbers.

2 Erbariol 8 Carboneri 9 Marmotini

20 Conza Lavexxi 33 Aseo 55 Mondo Novo

These appear never have been bound in.

Each are numbered (except frontispiece) and have an Italian verse engraved into in the plate. There are English verses, as often, printed on separate slips and pasted beneath the Italian verse... see pictures. Please note the slip for plate 16 is pasted to plate 17 and vice versa, also plate 17 is bound in immediately prior to 16 showing how the mistake was made.

The book is bound in contemporary blue cloth, with the English title "Cries of Venice" in gilt to the spine. The Binding is worn, there is a split on the outer hinge so this book would benefit from a sympathetic period rebind. There is a light crease to margin of first six leaves, contents generally clean and fresh.

The book is printed on thick "Laid" paper, watermarked Imperiale with three crescent moons… see backlit picture.

General Information:

The information given is believed to be correct but no guarantee is implied or given.

Gaetano Gherardo Zompini (1700 -1778) was born in Narvesa, in the Trivigiano Territory,Italy. John Strange 1732-1779 was the publisher.

The original edition was in 1753. There is one copy in the National Gallery Library (Eastlake Library) Shelf number NH 1085

Some copies of this work were also illuminated.

"Zompini began the drawings of the plates under the direction of Antonio Maria Zanetti (1680-17670), in imitation of the Arts of Bologna by Annibale Carracci. Under each copper he inserted some verses of Dr. Dottore Questini, Priest of Santa Maria Mater Domini, a friend of both Zompini and Zanetti.

The first edition came out in 1753 in two phases, a first with 40 plates and a second with the addition of the other 20.

Zompini eventually lost his sight, dying in 1778 in advanced age for the times.

The second edition was published posthumously in 1785 by John Strange, a British resident in Venice from 1773 to 1787, who had acquired the branches ? of Le Arti from the Zanetti heirs." *

* Culled from Dario Succi "From Carlevarijs to Tiepolo, Venetian and Friulian engravers of the eighteenth century"

The 1785 (John Strange) printing is held by 11 libraries and I understand that there is a large paper edition ( 53.4 x 38.3 cm)

"From a letter by John Strange we learn that the circulation of the present edition was one hundred or two hundred copies."

It was also printed in 1789

In 1803 (5th printing published by Lackington, Allen & Co, London.)

and 1832 printings were printed on "wove" paper rather than "Laid"

Sometimes with and sometimes without the Frontispiece and Memoria
