This book is in good condition. There is wear on the front, back and spine of the cover boards and the edges are worn as well. The corners are bumped as well. The previous owners names are affixed and written on the inside of the front and back cover boards.There is staining on the front, back and spine of the cover boards. The pages are yellowed and tanned, but free of markings. "For each worshiping generation "the people called Methodists" have provided a revised edition of the HYMNAL. In every revision, however urgent the need for different devotional expression, the constraining motive has accorded with the counsel of the apostle:"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord...." - Preface from The Methodist Hymnal

The Softcovers have Small Areas of Surface Damage to the Front Cover near the Bottom Edge, Small Rust Marks on the Rear Cover from being stored next to a Book which had Rusty Staples, and Light Edgewear, including a Small, Light Crease at the Top Edge of the Front Cover but No Tears, Stains, or Other Major Damage. The Staple Binding is Strong, Intact, and Undamaged. The Interior is Clean and Unmarked with No Writing, Highlighting, or Underlining and with No Tears, Creases, Stains, Mold, or Any Major Damage. J. Lemonnyer Bookseller in Rouen, 1881, Quarto, 2 ff + 150 + (3) pages. Volumes 3 & 4 of the reprint on Vergé paper of the superb 1773 edition of a selection of songs with scores by Jean Benjamin de Laborde (1734-1794) familiar with Louis XV and the Du Barry. For Volume 1, De Laborde had begun the illustrations with Jean-Michel Moreau (1741-1814), but he collaborated with Le Bouteux, Le Barbier and Saint-Quentin for the other 3 volumes. In addition to the front cover and the title page, there is a frontispiece in this volume (bound after the title page), and 25 intaglio engravings by Le Bouteux, Le Barbier and Saint-Quentin.

Condition: The two books were clearly damaged in a fire. The boards are in poor condition, and the edges are singed. There is some staining around the margins of some of the pages- more in Vol. 3 than Vol. 4. - but many other pages show little or no damage. Please see the photos...
