An American editor rents a room in Venice in the home of Juliana Bordereau, the elderly mistress of Jeffrey Aspern, a deceased Romantic poet, in order to procure from her the poet's papers. One of James best-selling longer novellas, The Aspern Papers was based on the love letters from Percy Bysshe Shelley to his wife Mary Shelley's stepsister, Claire Clairmont. The novel was heralded for demonstrating James' uncanny ability to build suspense while simultaneously developing the complexity of his characters. EB; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .

Sinopsis

With a decaying Venetian villa as a backdrop, an anonymous narrator relates his obsessive quest for the personal documents of a deceased Romantic poet, one Jeffrey Aspern. Led by his mission into increasingly unscrupulous behavior, he is ultimately faced with relinquishing his heart's desire or attaining it at an overwhelming price.
