Engraving, 15 1/4 x 10 inches.<br/> <br/> Star-shaped, lilac-blue flowers, with sunny yellow centers atop a foliage of lance shaped dark green leaves.Jan Commelin (1629-1692) was a botanist and the director of Horti Medici garden in Amsterdam, which housed a significant collection of strange and exotic plants introduced through the Dutch Indies Company's merchant ships. 'Horti Medici Amstelodamensis Rariorum' was published by Caspar, who was Jan's nephew. The illustrations were done by Jan Moninckx (1656-1714) Dutch botanical artist and his daughter Maria Moninckx (1673-1757), a Dutch botanical artist and painter.<br/> <br/>
