Aristotelis Valaoritis (Greek: Αριστοτέλης Βαλαωρίτης; 1824–1879) was a Greek poet, representative of the Heptanese School, and politician. He was also the great-grandfather of Nanos Valaoritis, one of the most distinguished writers of Greece. He was born in Lefkada in 1824 and was of Aromanian descent. His father was a rich merchant from the region of Epirus. Valaoritis completed his school education in Lefkada and Corfu. Afterwards he went to France and Italy to study law. He never worked as a lawyer though, but completely devoted himself to poetry. He spent an important part of his life in the small island of Madouri.

About the book: This work deals with two Greek fighters during the Greek War of Independence 1821 in Greece: Athanasios Diakos and Astrapogiannos.

Athanasios Nikolaos Massavetas (Greek: Αθανάσιος Νικόλαος Μασσαβέτας; 1788 – 1821) also known as Athanasios Diakos (Greek: Αθανάσιος Διάκος) was a Greek military commander during the Greek War of Independence, considered a venerable national hero in Greece

Yannos "Astrapoyiannos" was an 18th century Greek charioteer, ruler of Dorida in Roumeli. He flourished for many years (1760 - 1782), and was worshiped by the enslaved Greeks as a folk hero, punisher of the Turks, and liberator. Popular tradition wants him generous with the poor and merciless with the powerful. Aristotelis Valaoritis wrote a poem about Astrapogiannos, while in 1970 a film titled O Astrapogiannos was directed by Nikos Tzimas and starring Nikos Kourkoulos.
