Sobre este artículo

De Agostini Editions. Very Good/Very Good. 1996. First Edition. Hard Cover. 4to 1899883673 Nearly new condition. Dust jacket complete and unclipped. Black cloth with bright gilt titling. No ownership marks.Full-colour plates, maps and photos on every page. More than 80 essays, the Atlas looks at scores of cities, regions and countries all over the world that have been immortalized in literature or through their association with writers who lived there. The maps are a major feature of the book, locating key towns and cities, plotting real and fictional journeys and landscapes. These are supplemented by copious period drawings, photographs and illustrations of hundreds of people and places. Roman Clodia writes, "This collection of essays explores the connections between books and place in a myriad different ways: writers and works which are intimately associated with a place (the Brontës' moors, Austen's Bath, Dickens' London), but also the way in which our understanding of places has been shaped by the books written within and about them (Israel, postcolonial Africa and India, former Eastern Bloc countries). The essays are broadly chronological starting with Dante's Florence and ending with postmodern London, and are nicely eclectic in tone and content. The content ranges from the fairly well-known (Shakespeare's Stratford, Hardy's Wessex, Joyce's Dublin) to the far less obvious (Wittgenstein's Vienna, Kafka's Prague, Arabic literature from Andalusia). Some essays take in a broad period such as writers from the Cold War or Depression America, or an expansive view of place (Scandinavia, Latin America, Canada, Australia). For anyone interested in the relationships between geography and literature this is an ideal starting point, with lots of suggestions for places to visit and further reading.
