London: Boy's Own Paper, 1880. Print. Otherwise very good condition. Panoramic print of a cross-section of the Australian mail steamer "Orient". The cross section shows the inner workings of the ship, an inspiration to budding naval engineers! Five decks are revealed, a full view into the inner workings including the coal storage & loading, the cargo, pulley systems, the engines and turbines, the propeller, sleeping quarters in various classes, people on deck & working below. Lithograph by Emrik & Binger, printed in black, blue & orange. Across the top of the image is a series of ships in scaled diagrams, the Taurus, Gracie, Merton Hall, Persian Monarch, Great Eastern, Thermopylae, General Williams, Phaeton & Brotherly Love. 34 3/4 x 11" & margins, with contemporary folds. One sml. closed tear at left margin.
