New York: Redfield, 1857. FIRST EDITION, first printing. Full black pebbled cloth with professionally relaid spine. Reinforcement strip on front and back endpages also professionaly done. Damp staining to first 100 pages. "HEH has author's ALS, dated May 21, 1904, in which she states that only a few copies were struck off 'and then the book died a natural death without accomplishing its object. The Story has one commendable virtue, every and each incident is a recited and well known fact'."; Brignano's Black Americans in Autobiography, No. 679]. 8vo, dark brown cloth, 402 pages [followed by 8 pages of ads]. Although published anonymously in the form of a slave narrative, the book is in fact a work of fiction; the author was "a white Kentuckian and schoolteacher turned, rather ardently, abolitionist" [Jackson's A History of Afro-American Literature, p. 129].
