Autograph Letter Signed, in German. on a government postcard, Kimberly, South Africa, March 22, 1897
de KOCH, ROBERT
- Usado
Koch went to South Africa to assist in fighting the spread of rinderpest which had ravaged cattle stocks across Africa in the 1890s. He stayed for 3 months between 1896-7, at Kimberley, Cape Colony. Koch had concluded his work on cattle plague and left Kimberly on the day he wrote our letter. He writes to the Director of the Royal Health Authority Councilor Kohler in Berlin. In full, "I was lucky to get last minute tickets for passage on the German East Africa line's "Admiral," and I will depart from Durban on March 28. I will take the liberty to send you cards along the way from each of the countries we have to pass, in accordance with your request. Unfortunately, they do not have picture postcards yet, culture has not reached them yet...." Signed, "R. Koch." Some water staining on right margin text but words remain easily readable. The rinderpest epidemic seriously affected the Transvaal and Northern Cape particularly, bringing socioeconomic disaster to President Kruger's Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek. The disease, attributed to imported cattle, was highly contagious, but Koch found that an inoculation of bile from an infected animal safeguarded the rest of the herd. Koch propounded the theory that "one germ causes one disease- every disease has its specific germ." Although he could not isolate the specific pathogen, he developed an effective vaccine against rinderpest in February 1897 and stemmed the spread of the cattle plague. It reappeared about a century later. Koch is recognized for isolating the anthrax bacillus in 1877 as well as for work on cholera and malaria. Autograph

[No place: no publisher], 1960. Unbound. Near Fine. A collection of 25 decorative title cards for a range of motion pictures released between 1952 -1960. Each measures approximately 14" x 11". There is some wear to the extremities, a few scattered creases, and a bit of rubbing, but overall near fine with surprisingly bright colors. Each card has been screenprinted on the verso of a large movie poster that was cut into sections to match the dimensions of a typical lobby card. Movie theaters would occasionally commission local sign makers to produce lobby cards for display. The production symbols on many of the cards indicate they were created in the same years as the films they represent. Among the most notable titles in the collection are: *From Here to Eternity*, *Shane*, *Duel in the Sun*, *Stalag 17*, and *Gidget*. An attractive set of mid-century film memorabilia. A complete list is available upon request.

Descripción:
Unbound. Fine. Real photo postcard (image directly from a negative, not printed). Approximately 5.5" x 3.5". Postmarked 21 July 1906 from Barnstable, and 22 July 1906 from Boston. About fine. Oval photographic image of Perkins sitting in a rocking chair on a porch, probably in Barnstable. Perkins has labeled the photo "Jack did it!" and has addressed the card (in effect Signing it) to himself at Apthorp House at Harvard (a distinguished Colonial home in Cambridge, now the Master's residence in Adams House). A nice, early, and perhaps unrecorded image.

In a music studio, seated at an Ehrbar piano. With an autograph note signed to verso dated Vienna, September 24, 1936, addressed to the Colombian musicologist Otto de Greiff. With Bittner's return address stamp in purple ink to upper left corner, "Julius Bittner, Wien IX, Dietrichsteingasse 10." Very slightly worn. In very good condition overall. "Although Bittner's output embraces orchestral and chamber music, a large-scale Mass and several lieder and choruses, he devoted most of his creative energies towards writing for the stage. His passion for opera was fuelled by attending a performance of Lohengrin at the age of 12, and, following the precedent set by Wagner, he wrote the librettos for 15 of his own operas. Although his early attempts at the genre were not performed publicly, his friendship with the conductor Bruno Walter proved decisive in establishing his reputation, primarily with the opera Der Musikant produced in Vienna in 1910. His most successful work was Das höllisch Gold (1916) in…

Lithographer: Donaldson Brothers for the Arbuckle Brothers Coffee Co.c. 18893" x 5" Chromolithograph. Minor closed tear to left margin, else v. good.
A colourful card showing the map of "Indian Territory" (Oklahoma) with vignette of natives hunting buffalo and a decorative arrow case. Area indicates different tribes such as the Choctaws, Chicasaws, Wachitas, Seminoles and Cherokees.
The Arbuckle Brothers Coffee Company was founded in Pittsburgh, PA by brothers Charles and John Arbuckle. Pioneering a method of roasting and "sealing" the coffee beans with egg whites, which ensured the longer shelf life, their product met with immediate success. As a promotional gimmick they began to include chromolithographed "trade" cards in their one pound bags with themes of sports, food, historic scenes and the most sought after of the series- maps. The advertising ploy proved to be hugely popular and by 1915 another series was issued showing updated populations and newly built roads and railroads.

Rare Maynard Workshop Postcard of the New Old South Tower Copley Square Boston Massachusetts "THE CITY" POST CARDS is on a title block in the middle of blank back. There is a divided rule in the middle - one side for your message, another for the recipient's address. On the bottom is the tagline "FROM PHOTOGRAMS COPYRIGHTED BY THE MAYNARD WORKSHOP - WABAN - MASSACHUSETTS" The bottom left of the image has a very light c circled (the copyright symbol), beneath that is what appears to be "F and K" with a wavy line underneath with a small mark or dot under that. The card is unused, unstamped, undated. If you are a collector of Maynard Workshop cards, you know that they are hard to date. This card is circa 1920's or early 1930's. The image is of the Old New South Church. The original church was built in 1670, the second "version" in 1720, and the version in this postcard in built in 1873, which explains the "new."
