Fine.<br/> <br/> American abolitionist and author who was dispatched by President Lincoln in April 1864 on a visit to Jefferson Davis in Richmond, to deliver a proposal for peace which included the perpetual abolition of slavery. In return, Lincoln offered $500,000,000 as compensation to the slaveholders and amnesty to all those engaged in the rebellion.<br/> <br/>
