These four volumes are bound in 3/4 leather (spines and cover corners) with marbled covers and endsheets. Volume One: 1850 - 1854, Volume Two: 1854 - 1860, Volume Three: 1860 - 1862, Volume Four: 1862 - 1864. All four volumes are in Very Good Condition. Engraving, portrait print by Robert Thew of Frances Anne "Fanny" Kemble Butler (1809-1893) in costume as Isabella in William Shakespeare's Measure for Measure. The sheet measures 10 in x 7 ¼ in, with a vignette-decorated border of scenes from the play around an oval image, showing Fanny Kemble Butler in a full-figure pose. Once an illustration in a book, now disbound, with original tissue guard still attached, now torn. Slight chipping of the upper right-hand corner of the sheet, with no image loss.

Second edition, based largely on Peck's Guide for Emigrants, published in Boston in 1831, including chapters on Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky, Tennessee, Illinois, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, and Florida, and also including a history of steam-boating in the West. Sabin first attributed the work to Robert Bache.
Condition: Some staining to pages as well as intermittent foxing. Previous owner's name to front end paper, recased with end paper renewed else very good.

Blue cloth stamped in blind and gilt. Spine darkened, fraying to spine ends, corners rubbed, front hinge partially cracked. Embossed library stamp on a few pages, bookplate on front pastedown; otherwise unmarked. Provenance: From the collection of Burton scholar and bibliographer James Casada. Written a few years after Burton's celebrated account of his journey to Mecca and Medina, this book describes the explorer's 1860 visit to Salt Lake City. Burton, who met Brigham Young on the trip, applied his characteristic ethnographic eye to Mormon ways, and his work offers a detailed and sympathetic portrait. Possibly David Goodwin (c.1744-1825), who served as a militia officer during the Revolutionary War, later represented Charlestown in the Massachusetts legislature, and he was a founding member of the Massachusetts Bible Society.
