Rowland, Owen. Autograph letter signed to Latimer Clark (1822-98). Kentish New Town, 5 August 1861. 4pp. 179 x 113 mm. Traces of former mounting, 2 holes punched in upper margin (not affecting text), but very good.
To telegraph engineer Latimer Clark, involved in the development and construction of submarine cables, including the Atlantic Cable. Rowland worked with Clark on developing insulation materials for submarine cables. In this letter Rowland discusses an antimony alloy he had created for coating iron and steel plates for ships, with a possible hint of its application to telegraphy:
"Captn. Galton is very much pleased with the appearance of the metallic alloy and thinks that it will prove to be a very valuable process . . . I really believe that if a patent were taken out for coating iron or steel plates for ships it would stand good . . . I should vary the proportions of metal for such purposes but not for coating wires. Upon wires it must be pliable . . . Copper takes a beautiful coating. Would it affect India Rubber? I believe not."
